When you have a little lady who refuses to walk in her new shoes for mum, the ground is too prickly to let her run free, and she’s not up for sitting down… as a photographer you have to make a decision to flick the switch quickly and create with what’s present. Chuck in the fact this was the first socially distanced photo shoot after the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic and you can clearly see that this is where experience vs novice comes into play.

You have a mother, a daughter, good light, connection and flowers. It’s up to you to bring all of this together and to reassure an anxious Mum that even though her little one is not doing what we both expected (do kids ever?!) I was confident enough we’d get a great gallery for them both.

Carla had to carry her daughter for nearly 45minutes with a few rests here and there. My internal shot list went out the window and I had nothing but my own creativity and wits to rely upon.

Every nuance, interaction and emotion counted, every composition needed to be different and varied even though she was basically in the same position. We played, i prompted, we chatted and the pace of the session seamlessly flowed, even though it was different from what we had both expected.

Carla loved her entire gallery and said she’d always remember the time her little lady wouldn’t wear her shoes but the fun they had instead.

Thanks for trusting me Carla, even when it looked like things wouldn’t work, I could see the connection and love between you both and wanted desperately to create something for you.
